Metaverse – Facebook’s Plan To Take Social Media into Future

Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg is planning on creating one of most ambitious idea, something we have only seen in Sci-Fi shows so far. Zuckerberg is planning to create a separate virtual reality of interconnected apps which will use Virtual Reality.

The plan is so big that Zuckerberg may change the name of Facebook to make it fit better with his Metaverse initiative for future and they are investing billions to make it a reality. Here I have discussed everything we know of Metaverse for now and what Facebook is planning with it.

What Is Metaverse?

With the Covid-19 pandemic locking all of us in our homes, we have all come to realize the true importance of digitalizing the world. Holding office meetings, interacting with friends, studying in schools and colleges, everything came to a standstill for months until eventually we figured out other ways to do them.

But still, none of the ways we have figured out, like video conferencing apps, cannot bring the same feeling as being around others.

Zuckerberg announced in the Metaverse presentation that they are planning to build a more maximalist version of Facebook, which will span social presence, office work, and entertainment. Zuckerberg’s idea of the future of Facebook is definitely interesting.

Why Is It Significant?

Metaverse is a plan that is the closest to digitalize a social surrounding. The plan is to create a Virtual Reality around us that we can interact with. Holding holographic meetings or classes is one example, meeting with your friends while seeing them move around and interact as if they are with you is another possibility.

Metaverse can change the work environment we are used to for years. With the pandemic, companies have firsthand experienced the benefits of allowing employees to work from home, even if it lacks the environmental benefits, like holding a meeting or personal interaction.

These shortcomings of working from home can be fixed with the Metaverse, as it will allow a better interaction in meetings or other personal interactions needed for sharing ideas in an office space.

A VR meeting software, Horizon Workrooms, is already launched by Facebook for companies. These uses the Oculus VR headsets, which cost around $300 at the moment. The price for VR headsets are quite high at the moment for everyone to use metaverse, but it can soon become cheap when the project becomes bigger and the VR device becomes more relevant and not a luxary.

Is Facebook The Only Company Trying To Create The Metaverse?

No, creating such a large project cannot possibly be done by one company and Facebook has acknowledged that. Facebook is the most outspoken on metaverse at the moment and one of the bigger companies actively investing in it.

Epic Games have already raised $1 billion for its own metaverse project. Other video game companies like Roblox are investing in the Metaverse.

Closing Up

Metaverse is definitely interesting and we will all have to see how it develops in the future. With major players already in the game, it doesn’t look far. If you have any further questions regarding this article, ask them in the comment section.
