Turn Your Phone into a Webcam and Look Your Finest in Meetings!

Almost all laptops nowadays comes with a webcam. Desktops don’t. And the quality of the image on a normal webcam is far inferior to the camera on your smartphone. When most of us have a powerful camera in our pocket, why use a web cam?

But how to turn smartphones into webcam? Well here I have discussed how you can do just that! Read this article and turn your phone into a webcam and you will always look your best in those online meetings.

Why You Should Use Your Phone As A Webcam

Using your phone as a webcam has multiple benefits. Your smartphone likely has a better camera than the webcam your laptop has or the webcam you will likely end up buying for your desktop.

You do not need to spend extra money on a webcam when you already have a portable camera with better recording with you. Also, Webcam availability has decreased and the prices have skyrocketed after the pandemic locked the entire world to their homes.

It is much easier and cost efficient at the moment to use your smartphone as a webcam.

How To Use Phone As Webcam Both Wired And Wirelessly

There are multiple ways to use your smartphone as a webcam. This can be done both wired and wirelessly. When you are using your phone as webcam wirelessly, it’s much easier to setup but may lag.

The wired way is a bit more lengthy to setup but should give better connectivity. In both the cases, the video conferencing apps you are using should detect them as webcams.

How To Use Android Smartphone As Webcam

If you are using an Android smartphone, then you can turn it into a webcam using the Droidcam app. I have personally used it and can say that it does a great job. Droidcam is easy to setup and connect. It also gives good quality, upto 480p on the free version and 720p on the premium version.

Download Droidcam from Play Store on your phone and Droidcam Windows Client on your PC. For better video and more features like flipping, rotating, zoom in/out, and more, you will have to purchase DroidcamX on your Android. I personally found the free version good enough. Now, follow the steps given below to turn your phone into webcam.

Turn Android Smartphone Into Webcam Wirelessly

If you want to use your android phone as webcam wirelessly, follow the steps given here:

  • Open the Droidcam app on your android device.
  • Note the Wi-Fi IP and DroidCam port. Now, connect your Android to the same Wi-Fi your PC is connected with. You can select which camera, rear or front, you want to use as the web cam by tapping on the camera shaped icon in the top right corner.

One downside of the wireless webcam connection is your video can lag. This can be quite annoying at times. Connecting with a USB solves this problem and below I have shown how you can do it.

Using your Android smartphone as a webcam while connecting with a USB is a bit lengthier process. But, you will get a stable video capture without lag with it. Here is how you can do it:

  • First you will have to enable USB debugging on your Android phone. Tap 5-6 times on the build number in the About section of the Settings to enable the Developer mode.
  • Search for Developer mode or Developer options in the Settings, and open it.

Now you can use your Android phone as webcam while connecting with USB. The other video conference apps will also consider Droidcam as the webcam. The video should be stable and won’t lag from your end.

How To Use iPhone As Webcam

iPhone comes with a stunning camera with great video capture. Using your iPhone as webcam is also possible using Droidcam. Droidcam is now also available in the Apple app store.

I find Droidcam easy to use and setup, and using it wirelessly requires the same steps as Android. Connecting with an USB is a bit different on iOS for Droidcam. USB connections on iOS app requires iTunes, which auto detects your iDevice when it’s plugged in. So, also install iTunes on your Windows to make it work.

The rest of the steps from inside the Droidcam app are same as mentioned in the Android section. One downside of Droidcam is that you cannot use it on Mac. For Mac, you can use Camo. Camo works with both Windows and Mac.

  • Plug in your iPhone with to the Mac with a USB cable, keeping the Camo app open on your iPhone.
  • Camo should start using the iPhone camera as a webcam.

The Camo premium version comes with more features for better video projection. The free version is good enough, but if you want a better setup, go for the premium version.
