Fix: Steam Network Usage Stuck At 0 Bytes [Solved]

While downloading a game on Steam, if you encounter Steam network usage 0 or your Steam download gets stuck at 0 bytes, then you will not be able to download your desired content.

Let us now dig deeper to find out the exact reasons for Steam network usage 0 bytes and figure out the feasible solutions to fix it.

1) Check The Internet Connection

If you see download freezes at 0 bytes on Steam, first of all, check your internet connection.

Steam won’t be able to update or download anything if the internet connection is unstable.

If your Wi-Fi connection is not working, then fix it from here and then move on to the next solutions.

2) Check Disk Usage

If your Steam download gets stuck at 0 bytes, then check Steam’s disk usage.

Steam sometimes makes changes to the local files in the background before it downloads anything further.

This can be the reason why Steam downloads get stuck. You can open the Steam download page and check the disk usage speed.

3) Pause And Resume Download

While downloading a game on Steam if it got stuck at 0 bytes then pause and resume the download.

Often this works and you can download it without any problem this time.

To pause and resume your download follow the steps given below:

  • Click on the View tab and select the Downloads option.
  • Pause your download as shown in the picture below.

  • Allow a few seconds and then resume the download.

4) Restart Steam

If you are having a stable internet connection and still download rate gets stuck on Steam at 0 bytes, restart Steam.

  • To do that, pause your download and exit Steam. Then right-click on the Taskbar and select Task Manager.
  • Go to the Process tab and check if any Steam task is running. Right-click on the task and choose the End task option.

  • Reopen your Steam client and try resuming the download. If this does not help, update Steam.

5) Change The Download Region For Steam

If your server is having a technical glitch or is overloaded by traffic, it can also stop the Steam download at 0 bytes.

So, change the download region following the steps given below:

  • Open Steam and click on the Steam tab. From the given options, select Settings.

  • From the Downloads section, go to the Download Region on the right side.

  • Select another download region closer to you. You should be able to continue with the download.

6) Update Steam

Sometimes the Steam app is itself bugged and this can cause issues while downloading any content on Steam.

So, update your Steam client to avoid such issues.

  • Open Steam Menu and click on Check for Client Updates.

  • Wait till you get a confirmation message that your steam is up to date.

Now try to download your content on steam. If you get the same error, go to the next solution.

7) Provide Administrative Privileges To Steam

The elements of the game that you want to download may require administrative privileges.

So, open steam as an administrator and see if this can fix the problem.

To run Steam as an administrator follow the steps given below:

  • Right-click on your Desktop Steam shortcut and expand its Properties.

8) Clear Steam Cache

All the temporary data related to the Steam app and setup is stored as an app cache.

When you open Steam next time this app cache makes things faster.

But if it gets bugged somehow then you may have Steam network usage 0 kinds of issues.

To fix this, delete this cache following the given steps:

  • Right-click on your Steam shortcut from the Desktop and click on Open file location.

  • Locate the App cache folder and copy that to a safe location as a backup.
  • After that right-click on the app ache folder and select the Delete option.

If this solves the problem then you can remove the backup of the app cache folder.

You will find a new app cache folder got already created in its place.

9) Flush Steam Configuration & DNS

To eradicate the downloading issue on Steam flush Steam DNS and configuration. This will reset any corrupted DNS data.

For doing do follow the given steps:

  • Press Windows + R keys to open the Run utility. Copy & paste the following command in the Run dialog box and press the Enter key:

  • A pop-up window will appear. Confirm by pressing the OK button.

  • Allow a few seconds and then enter Command Prompt in the Windows search box.
  • Right-click on Command Prompt option and select the Run as administrator option.
  • Enter the following command in the elevated command prompt window and press the Enter button:

After finishing the above steps, check if you can download your content now, else move on to the next steps.

10) Allow Steam Through Firewall

Windows Defender Firewall can become overprotective and prevent Steam from functioning.

So, allow Steam through Firewall following the steps described below:

  • Enter Windows Defender Firewall in the Windows search option and select the top option.
  • Click on Allow an app or feature through Defender Firewall.

  • Click on the Change settings option as shown below.

  • Scroll down to find Steam under the Allowed Apps and Features window.
  • Check the boxes attached to Steam to allow it through Firewall.

  • If you cannot find Steam there, click on Allow another app and include Steam there.

  • Exit the window and download your content from Steam now.
